“You have the best job in the world!” I hear it at almost every session or when I tell people what I do. I can’t deny that I do, in fact, have one of the best jobs that I can imagine for me. I love having an outlet for my artistic side and well, I’ve never done well with authority so being my own boss is pretty awesome.
Being a photographer is exciting and fun and fulfilling but it isn’t always easy. It becomes less easy when it is your full time job. As in: Simply-Boudoir is an incorporated LLC. We have payroll, taxes, an accountant, overheard to meet. You know, usual business stuff. On top of that, I am also the photographer, editor, marketer, blogger, designer, etc.
At the end of the day? There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. When a session like this special one comes along I just down an extra cup (or 3) of coffee and burn the midnight oil.
This beautiful lady contacted me and wanted to send her husband a special birthday gift. Her husband who is currently deployed in Iraq. With our booking schedule, it worked out that her session could only happen the day before his birthday, which was also Mother’s Day. Jade is a selfless makeup artist that gave her day up for this session and well, since it’s my business of course I didn’t mind being there. Iraq is 7 hours ahead of us so by the time I got home after another shoot that day it was already his birthday. I promised my client that she would have her images to send him though, and she did. She paid for the USB of images at her session and by 7am she had all of her digital images ready to download and I also put together a special video for him. Yes, that gave me extra work but I didn’t mind. I love my job, I love my clients, and I knew how much this special man meant to her. At the end of the day, it’s because of him that I am able to own my own business and do what I love so I downed the extra coffee and smiled, grateful through heavy eyelids and working a 24 hour day that I am lucky enough to do what I love.
Thank you to this beautiful mother and wife for allowing me to share some of the shots from her session. Her husband, of course, was completely surprised and loved the images. She was such a pleasure to work with and although her session was a rush edit/delivery, she was a reminder of how amazing my job is. She gave up her Mother’s Day and drove 2 hours each way to spend the morning with us and we had a blast at her shoot. Yes, I do have one of the best jobs in the world and while it isn’t always easy this is right where I’m meant to be.
